![]() ![]() ![]() In AoE4, every single mission is just "Blue" vs "Red". The El Cid and Atilla campaigns have a plethora of missions with multiple objectives, different factions, and allies and enemies with real personality. It just all felt like a bit of a shame compared to even The Conquerors expac in AoE2 which was released over 20 years ago. Maps are either "Defend the base for 40 minutes until reinforcements arrive" which is repeated almost every other level in the English and French campaigns, a trek through a single lane map from your one base to the enemy's one base with no expansion or flanking or anything of the sort, or a fixed-force mission which on release were frequently unbeatable on hard mode without cheesing enemy units' chase distances. ![]() The missions themselves are burdened by incredibly passive AI that only acts on the most basic of scripting. ![]() There's just no weight to any of your actions when equal measure seems to be given to both Joan of Arc and at the same time The Battle of the Forty. While I don't want to dwell on it too much, AoE4's campaigns felt tremendously underproduced with very little tying the missions together besides some token drone footage.
